Set the Soundtrack to Route 66’s Centennial in Santa Monica
Route 66 turns 100 in 2026, marking a century of one of America’s most iconic journeys. From Chicago to the Pacific Ocean, the Mother Road has shaped road trips, music and popular culture for generations.
At the western end of the road sits Santa Monica, where Route 66 meets the sea. With direct flights from Dublin to Los Angeles, it is a natural stop for Irish holidaymakers exploring California and the Mother Road.
As the official western End of the Trail, Santa Monica plays a central role in the Centennial celebrations. To mark the milestone, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism has introduced a series of initiatives, including a global music competition celebrating the spirit of Route 66 and a dedicated three-day itinerary that brings the story of the road to life.
Celebrate the close of the journey at the iconic Santa Monica Pier, home to the famous “End of the Trail” sign, where the road gives way to ocean views and a relaxed coastal stay.

A Global Music Moment Where You’re Invited
Music has always been part of the Route 66 story, and to mark the Centennial, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism has launched a global Route 66 Song Contest.
Open to songwriters and musicians aged 18 and over, the competition invites original tracks inspired by the road’s legacy and its iconic endpoint in Santa Monica. One winning entry will receive a $10,000 USD prize. Submissions close on 13 September 2026, with the winner announced in November 2026.
