Pure Michigan: Celebrating 100 Years of the National Cherry Festival
In 2026, Michigan will celebrate a major milestone as the National Cherry Festival marks its 100th anniversary. Held each summer in Traverse City, the festival has been a cherished tradition since 1925 and has grown into one of the most popular festivals in the United States, attracting visitors from across the country.
The Cherry Capital of the World
Traverse City is known as the “Cherry Capital of the World” thanks to its long history of cherry growing and its ideal location along the shores of Lake Michigan. Michigan is the leading producer of tart cherries in the United States, with much of the crop grown in the Grand Traverse Bay region. The area’s unique climate and fertile soils create excellent conditions for cherry orchards.
A Festival Rooted in Tradition
What began as the “Blessing of the Blossoms” in 1925 has evolved into an eight-day celebration of Michigan’s cherry heritage. Visitors can enjoy parades, live entertainment, family activities, air shows, local food, arts and crafts, and, of course, plenty of cherry-inspired treats. The 100th anniversary promises to be a special celebration of both the region’s agricultural roots and its vibrant community spirit.
